Before You Apply – Making Sure You Are Ready

PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU COMMENCE THE APPLICATION PROCESS.
You must include the following with your supporting documents:

  • Proof that you have passed one of the following on September 1, 2017 or later. No other physical abilities test will be accepted:
    • University of Alberta Firefighter Applicant Physical Aptitude Evaluation
    • University of Victoria Firefighter Physical Abilities Test
  • It is the candidate’s responsibility to:
    • Arrange for the completion of the test at either location
    • Ensure that a valid certificate issued by the testing facility between September 1, 2017 and July 27, 2018 is included in the on-line application during the period that the Firefighter competition is open (Tuesday July 3 to Friday July 27, 2018)
    • Book the test appointment with their chosen location well ahead of time to ensure test availability. No exceptions will be made.

The application process comprises various stages, with instructions on each screen. You should expect the application process to take approximately 45 minutes as you will navigate through the following screens:

  • Contact
  • Documents (see paragraph 4 below)
  • Employment
  • Education
  • General Profile
  • Apply for Job (Job related questions, of which there are 28)
  • Your Application is Complete

You must meet the minimum requirements. See Requirements.

Before you apply, you will need to have the following documents ready:

  1. Resume (Electronic Document 1) To be saved as a separate electronic document. Our system recognizes the most commonly used file formats.
  2. Cover Letter (Electronic Document 2) To be saved as a separate electronic document. Our system recognizes the most commonly used file formats. (Maximum file size 5120KB)
  3. Supporting Documents (Electronic Document 3) All supporting documents should be scanned together and saved as one separate electronic document (Maximum file size 5120 KB). Zip files (.zip) are not acceptable.

If you do not have access to equipment which can scan these certificates into one document, and is within the 5120 KB file limit size, please locate a business centre in your area to do this for you.

You will be given the opportunity to provide additional supporting documentation later in the recruitment process.

The supporting documents should INCLUDE ONLY the following certificates in this ORDER:

  1. Certificate with Proboard or IFSAC seal for your Firefighter 2 (NFPA1001). You must have completed the NFPA 1001 training to apply. If you have not yet received a certificate, a temporary document from the fire school or academy confirming your completion is acceptable. You will then be required to attach your certificate to your application once you receive it.
  2. High School Certificate or Transcript.
  3. Driver’s Abstract (confirming a minimum of a BC Driver’s Licence, Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement (or equivalent), and issued no earlier than June 1, 2018 and no later than July 27, 2018). For any out of province driver’s licence, please contact ICBC and confirm your equivalency prior to applying.
  4. Certificate(s) or Transcript(s) for any Post-Secondary Education (degree, diploma, trade, non-fire-related certificate programs). Documents must clearly show the credential(s) that you received and/or the number of credits that you received. Attainment of a Trade Qualification must be clearly indicated, ideally on an ITA transcript, or on a certificate of qualification.
  5. Certificate for First Aid/First Responder/Medical courses: (For example: Occupational First Aid Level 1, Standard First Aid – Industry with CPR Level C, Emergency First Aid – Industry, OFA 3, FMR 3, EMR, EMR Bridging, PCP, EMR Licence, PCP Licence, nurse or doctor.)
  6. Proof that you have passed one of the following on September 1, 2017 or later. No other physical abilities test will be accepted:
    • University of Alberta Firefighter Applicant Physical Aptitude Evaluation
    • University of Victoria Firefighter Physical Abilities Test

  7. Completed Volunteer Experience Verification Form, confirming your volunteer experience, OTHER THAN SERVING AS A VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER, including the number of hours and length of volunteer experience.
  8. Certificates or Transcripts for ONLY the following Fire Specific courses in the following order. Even if you are not certain that your credentials are equivalent to these standards, please submit your certificates and we will assess them:
    • Auto Extrication/Vehicle Rescue (NFPA 1006/FS160/FS161)
    • Confined Space Rescue* (NFPA 1006)
    • Hazardous Materials** (NFPA 472)
    • Technical Rope Rescue* (NFPA 1006)
    • Swift Water Rescue* (NFPA 1006)
    • Lifesaving (Bronze Cross and/or Bronze Medallion and/or Instructor and/or National Lifeguard Service Award)

*Operations and Technician level certifications are given equal consideration for Confined Space Rescue, Technical Rope Rescue, and Swift Water Rescue.

** The Technician level certification is regarded as a higher level certificate for Hazardous Materials.

Consider your medical condition in accordance with NFPA1582. It is the candidate’s responsibility to review and understand these standards.

Our Firefighter competition is open from Tuesday July 3 to Friday July 27, 2018 at 5:00 pm.

To apply click the Apply to Job button on the Making Your Application page. This button will only be available during the date & time the competition is open. You need only apply once as it is shared by the three North Shore municipalities.

We will not be accepting hard copies of documentation whatsoever.

You must meet the minimum required qualifications on July 27, 2018 – the date that the competition closes.

All supporting documentation must be submitted at the time of your on-line application, which must be made no later than 5:00 pm on July 27, 2018 for your application to be regarded as complete.

Only candidates with the minimum required qualifications on July 27, 2018 (and whose application is regarded as complete at that date) will be considered for advancement in the competition.
